Theatre Renovation Campaign

A Brave, Bold Tomorrow

Donate Now At This Link

Our mission is as powerful and important as ever. By creating theatre “For Kids, By Kids,” we empower youth to develop the tools to communicate with clarity, confidence and creativity no matter where life may lead.  Our legacy is the lives of our students from over the past 65 years.

If we can raise $40,000 by the end of April 2017, we access more than $100,000 of added funds from matching grants!

When funds are raised, the City of Davenport will commit $70,000 and the Scott County Regional Authority will commit $30,175.

In 2008 we had 400 enrollments annually. This year we are on course for 1,750 enrollments in our theatre and dance programs. Our Mainstage provides theatrical training and professional guidance to our students, and reaches thousands of community members each season!  We continue on with our Spectrum Theatre program for youth with autism and carry on the proud tradition of amazing summer camps.

Items to be renewed:

Theatre Seating
Commercial Carpeting
Interior Painting
Subflooring Repairs
and More!

36 years ago was when renovation last began in our theatre.  Mary Fluhrer Nighswander (founder), Leone Bredbeck (original Showtime Pal, co-founder), and countless volunteers, parents and students spent over 15 years raising the funds and putting in the elbow grease to create a home for DJT.

In 1981, we celebrated as the Nighswander Theatre opened its doors for the first time. For decades we have made use of the amazing improvements of the past.

(See photos of old renovation in our history photo library)

Today our cool 1970's orange chairs have fallen out of style and are worn through.  The once springy and comfy cushions are flat and frayed. Our carpet needs replaced desperately. The theatre needs repainted. Structural repairs must take place in our subflooring.  And as with any project, there are many more little fixes along the way.

Please help us ensure a home continues to exist for the kids of America’s second oldest children’s theatre.  With great care, your contribution will make a difference for the next 35 years.  And yes, in 35 years, we’ll see you all at Davenport Junior Theatre’s 100th anniversary party!

Thanks for your support in helping provide the opportunity that every kid may learn to speak clearly, confidently and creatively, no matter where life may lead!

Did you know?

Since 2008, we have made huge improvements
to our programs and facilities!

Keep scrolling to see them all!

DJT Dance
Founded in 2011 with 61 enrollments, our dance program has grown to over 225! It is an affordable, professional and non-competitive school based on having fun and gaining physical poise.

Junior Board
In this youth-run group, students learn about arts management and organizational leadership. Through the years they have raised over $12,000 to fund out-of-town trips to see theatre, a touring Shakespeare production performed by students, student-directed one-act plays, and special workshops!

Design Lab
We believe students should experience all types of design. Our new design lab allows kids to compose music and create sound designs for the first time! In coming years, the lab will give students the opportunity to take part in lighting, scenic and costume design in new and innovative ways.

Facility Improvements & Expansion
2015: Design Lab installed
2014: New acting studios, dance studio, and dance lobby
2014: $45,000 of new lighting technologies and equipment
2012: All new theatre curtains
2011: Lobby Improvements
2010: New parking lot in front of the theatre

Mainstage Productions
Theatre “For Kids, By Kids!”. DJT’s oldest tradition is alive and well. Students are not only the actors! They also are trained on crew, run lights & sound, stage manage, help front-of-house, and create graphic designs, all while working alongside the area’s top theatre professionals!

Online Digital Library
This massive volunteer effort is a complete archive of photos, newspaper articles, and other documents from our 65-year history. It took 3 years to complete. Check it out in the ‘Sights and Sounds’ section of our website. Who knows...you may even appear in some of the photos!

Junior Theatre, Inc., the producing arm of Davenport Junior Theatre, is a non-profit organization that supports DJT programs, including Mainstage shows, the Junior Board, special workshops, facility improvements, educational trips, scholarships, and more.
